Most abnormal Pap smears result from Human Papillomaviruses (HPVs), a group of more than 100 different viruses found in a large number of sexually active adults. In fact, HPV is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections in the United States. Most women who have HPV do not experience any symptoms and are not aware that they have the disease. This is why it is so important for women over the age of twenty-one to receive annual Pap smears. If left untreated, HPV can lead to cervical cancer as well as other serious health problems.
