Genetic Screening Q & A

What Exactly is Genetic Screening?

Genetic screening is a type of testing that’s done during pregnancy to screen an unborn fetus for certain birth defects. The process looks for changes in chromosomes, genes, and proteins that indicate potential health issues. There are several tests that may be performed, including Nuchal Translucency, Cell-Free DNA (Harmony) and AFP (Alpha Fetal Protein). Most genetic screening is optional.

Who Should Consider Genetic Screening?

All expecting parents are welcome to have genetic screening performed. Many decide to so that they can learn more about the health condition of their unborn child. If there aren’t abnormalities, genetic screening can ease worries. If an unborn fetus has a birth defect, finding out sooner can help parents prepare.

In certain situations, a doctor might recommend genetic screening. If either parent has a family history of a hereditary disease, there is an increased chance that the child will also have the disorder. Doctors and parents might want to determine if the child will have the disorder before the child is born.

Additionally, people of certain ethnicities are at an increased chance of having certain health issues. Genetic screening can determine if the child will be born with some of these conditions. Some ethnicities are also prone to certain health issues.

Is Genetic Screening Covered by Insurance?

Some health insurance policies provide coverage for certain genetic screenings, but not all insurance plans cover all screening tests. To find out if their plan provides coverage for genetic screening, patients should contact their insurance provider or the North Pointe office.
