4 Ways to Alleviate Period Pain

Very few women have a “comfortable” period each month. Pain associated with your menstrual cycle is medically termed dysmenorrhea. Dysmenorrhea can range mild cramping to debilitating pelvic pain. Regardless of its severity, you don’t have to just endure it. There are ways to treat painful periods.

At North Pointe OB/GYN, we recommend the following strategies for reducing period pain:

#1 Determine the type of dysmenorrhea.

There are two types of dysmenorrhea, one of which typically needs medical attention. Primary dysmenorrhea is the most common and refers to consistent discomfort that fades over time as your cycle progresses. Your pain may be noticed but does not interfere with your daily activities. However, if your period pain is significant, worsens or impacts your ability to carry out everyday functions, you may have secondary dysmenorrhea. This type of period pain is often caused by an underlying condition that needs to be treated first, such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), uterine fibroids, infection, tumors or polyps. Identifying the type of dysmenorrhea can help guide us to the most long-term treatment plan.

#2 Adjust your diet.

Women with primary dysmenorrhea tend to produce extra uterine prostaglandins hormones, which can increase inflammation in the body. What you eat, however, can help reduce this consequence. Try to avoid red meat and dairy products, which are known to boost prostaglandins production. To minimize cramping and bloating, load up on fruits, veggies, seeds, grains and water!

#3 Keep active, then rest up.

Getting a workout in may be the last thing you want to do when your period pain hits. However, exercise is proven to boost endorphins. Your body needs even more of these feel-good hormones during menstruation. You don’t have to sprint around the track to gain these benefits, a simple walk, swim or yoga session can do the job. After you exert yourself, however, be sure to let your body rest. A balance of activity and rest can help manage cortisol levels, which in turn impacts irregular and painful periods.

#4 Consider medication or supplements.

Most period pain is caused by inflammation in the body. Therefore, many women get the relief they need with an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory such as ibuprofen.

Since the leading cause of discomfort and pain is increased inflammatory response, anti-inflammatory drugs can help such as ibuprofen. Birth control can also minimize painful periods as well as natural herbal remedies like ginger, fennel and chamomile. If you have secondary dysmenorrhea, however, you may need more aggressive treatment for your underlying condition before you can expect your painful periods to reside.
