3D /4D Ultrasounds Q & A

What is 3D/4D Ultrasound?

3D and 4D ultrasounds provide more detail than standard 2D ultrasounds. A 3D ultrasound provides a three-dimensional image of the baby.  A 4D ultrasound is similar to a 3D one, but it provides the 3D images as a video in real time. The first glimpse of your child is something you'll remember forever. At North Pointe OB/GYN, we're proud to offer the latest ultrasound technology that provides amazingly clear 3D/4D images of the most important subject of all - your baby. We offer 2 ultrasound packages that are available to all of our obstetrical patients.  We can accommodate up to 2 visitors in the exam room and we offer a remote viewing room for any additional visitors so you can share this special moment with family and friends.

Our packages include:

Gender Reveal:  $75

Ultrasounds performed at 14+ weeks of pregnancy can often reveal gender. If you’d like an early opportunity to know whether you’re having a boy or a girl, be sure to schedule right away. At your request, we’ll conceal the answer in an envelope and you can have a “reveal” party for your family and friends! You’ll receive a flash drive with photos and several printed images, sealed or not…your choice!

Sneak-a-Peek: $150

The best chance to see your baby moving, from kicking and stretching to yawning (yes, babies can yawn in the womb) is from 28 to 36 weeks. This session is approximately 20 minutes of scan time and images are sent directly to your cell phone through a text message. We can also save your digital ultrasound images to a USB flash drive if you bring one to your appointment.

Are 3D or 4D Ultrasounds Safe?

Over the last 30 years, ultrasound studies have been conducted and have not shown any harm caused to mother or baby. In the United States, it is now accepted and normal to have routine scans. Complicated or high-risk pregnancies often require multiple ultrasounds. 3D/4D ultrasound is the same intensity as conventional 2D. Ultrasound works by sound waves that enter the body through the transducer that is placed on the mother’s abdomen. The generated echo is what creates the images you see. Please address any concerns with one of our obstetricians.

What is the best time in pregnancy to have a 3D/4D ultrasound?

Gender can usually be determined any time after 14 weeks. Before 28 weeks, babies have a more skeletal appearance. Therefore, we recommend that you schedule your 3D/4D experience between 28 and 30 weeks to obtain the best image of your baby’s face. Successful 3D/4D imaging depends upon your baby’s position, size, fluid and movement. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee image quality due to these factors.

Do you accept medical insurance?

3D/4D is a non-diagnostic service and will not be covered by your insurance. The patient is responsible for payment at time of service. We accept cash & all major credit cards.

Will this 3D/4D ultrasound take the place of my scheduled diagnostic ultrasound?

No. This is an optional service and does not replace any of your diagnostic scans. You must presently be under the care of North Pointe OB/GYN to take advantage of this service. If a potential abnormality is seen we may recommend that a formal ultrasound be performed to evaluate your baby more thoroughly. That is the good news about having your elective scan in our office.  Your doctors and midwives are right here to address any issues you may have.

Do I have to have a full bladder?

No!  It is however highly recommended that you drink more than you usually do the week before your ultrasound appointment. This ensures that the amniotic fluid will be adequate for optimal images, but you may use the restroom as many times as needed before, during and after the ultrasound.

What if my baby is uncooperative and we are not able to obtain images?

We make every effort to obtain high quality images. However there can be obstacles such as the baby’s position or other complications such as low fluid or maternal obesity that can prevent good quality.  In most cases you will be asked to return on a different day at no extra charge.  We cannot refund your money, but will make an additional attempt to obtain adequate images.  This will be at the discretion of the sonographer.
