STD Testing Q & A

What Exactly Are Sexually Transmitted Diseases?

The term “sexually transmitted diseases” encompasses any disease or infection that is primarily passed from one person to another through a sexual act. The diseases and infections can be caused by bacteria, fungi, or viruses. Additionally, they can be transmitted via other means, but the main mode of transmission is intercourse or another sexual act.

AIDs, which is caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is perhaps the most well-known STD. It’s far from the only one, though. Just a few other common STDs include:

  • hepatitis B
  • chlamydia
  • genital warts
  • genital herpes
  • HPV

Are STDs Different from STIs?

The terms “STD” and “STI” are used as synonyms to refer to the same sexually transmitted diseases and infections. Some providers prefer the term STD, which stands for “sexually transmitted disease,” while others show a preference for STI, which is short for “sexually transmitted infection.”

How Are STDs Diagnosed?

STDs are diagnosed via testing. There are four main types of tests:

  • Pap smears, which check for the HPV virus in women
  • Swabs of the genitals or anus, which check for herpes
  • Blood tests, which check for HIV, herpes, and syphilis
  • Urine tests, which check for gonorrhea and chlamydia

These are just some examples of the STDs that these tests are used to diagnose. The list of STDs isn’t comprehensive.

Is STD Testing Confidential?

Like all medical testing and services, STD testing is kept strictly confidential. Federal law prohibits doctors from sharing any information about a patient’s STD testing, or even that they had STD testing done unless the patient has given the doctor permission to do so. Many doctors will ask for permission to share some information about the testing with the patient’s insurance company, for billing purposes, and the results of the testing with other healthcare providers who see the patient, so those providers can better treat the patient. It’s completely up to the patient whether anyone else is told about any STD tests that are performed.
